Dr. Karen Schmitt serves as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin Colleges. She is a central member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, providing academic and administrative leadership to foster collaboration between faculty, students and external communities to achieve a high standard of excellence in instruction and student success. As provost, Schmitt is the Chief Academic Officer of UW Colleges, bearing further responsibilities such as overseeing the planning, development and administration of UW Colleges’ programs, activities and budget in the instructional and academic support areas.
Schmitt’s personal educational achievements include a Ph.D. in geological sciences from Columbia University; an MSc in geology from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand; and a BS in geology and geophysics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Before her position with UW Colleges, Schmitt served as the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Vice Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of Alaska Southeast and as the Dean of the Community and Technical College at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Her broad expertise in higher education also includes extensive experience in two-year access institutions and online education.
