Study Abroad
UW Colleges offers short-term study abroad programs to China and Mexico in the summer of 2010. Space is limited and registration deadlines are more than three months prior to travel. Inquire early to secure your place.
Participants must print out, complete, sign and mail in the three forms below. The forms should be mailed along with the required deposit to the contact person listed for each individual program. Deposit checks and final payments should be made out to “UW Colleges” and sent to the contact person listed for each individual program. Participants cannot register directly for a study abroad program in PRISM. The contact person will make sure each participant is registered properly in PRISM.
A $500 deposit is due with application and is refundable up until the full payment deadline (See each trip for specific payment deadlines). Deposits and all payments are non-refundable after the full payment deadline.

China Adventure Options
Participants may choose one of the following two options, run concurrently at Mercan School in Taiyuan, China:
Option 1: Chinese Language and Culture Immersion
Earn four credits of Chinese
Immerse yourself in the culture and language of China in this four-week program open to Mandarin language learners of all levels, including beginners. Based in the ancient city of Taiyuan, you will live with a Chinese family and be placed in morning classes appropriate to your level. You will also have an opportunity to participate in cultural workshops such as Wushu and Chinese watercolor painting. Weekends will offer excursions to areas of interest, including a remote mountain village and some of China's most ancient historical sites. The program also includes touring to Beijing and Xian.
Option 2: Summer Camp Teaching Experience
Earn three credits in Education (EDU 211) 
This program offers participants a chance to connect with Chinese children and families as an instructor/assistant at two five-day camps designed for primary school students to learn and improve their English skills through a variety of fun activities and outings. After an initial period of touring to Beijing and Xian, you will receive a week of training, orientation and methodologies to prepare for your work with the day camps. No prior teaching experience is necessary but participants who chose this option should have an interest in working with children. Based in the ancient city of Taiyuan, you will live with a Chinese family, where you will have an opportunity to immerse yourself in the every day life of the Chinese people and culture. Weekends will offer excursions to areas of interest, including a remote mountain village and some of China's most ancient historical sites.

A Journey to the Land of Mexica and the Maya
3 Credits: Anthropology 291
¡Vámonos! Join us on a journey through the land of the Aztecs to the home of the Maya – from the cool central plateau of Mexico to its warm and lush green forests. This journey will introduce you to
Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), the capital of the Aztecs; Teotihuacan, the city of the gods; Cholula, the city with the world’s largest pyramid, and Oaxaca the frontier of the Maya. During this three-week voyage, you will learn about the peoples and cultures of Mexico from Dr. Jayant Anand, a cultural anthropologist with fieldwork experience in Mexico.
Participants have the option of earning 3 credits in Anthropology that may be applied towards meeting Social Sciences (SS) requirements at UW Colleges. Students in this study abroad program will also learn theories and methods in anthropology and conduct their own mini-research project.
The trip includes:

Spanish Language Immersion in Mexico
Earn up to 4 Credits of Spanish (AP or HU)
Immerse yourself in the culture and language of Mexico in this three-week program open to Spanish learners of all levels, including beginners. You will be placed in morning classes appropriate to your level and taught in the target language. Students will have the option of living with a Mexican family. Weekends and afternoons will offer excursions to local markets, artisans, churches, museums and other areas of interest and you will have an opportunity to participate in cultural workshops such as cooking and salsa dancing!

The Glories of Ancient Egypt
3 Credits: Anthropology 291
Explore the magnificent archaeological sites, monuments, and museums of Ancient Egyptian civilization. This two-week adventure to Egypt takes you to the Great Pyramids Giza, the oldest, largest, and the last of the ancient world's "seven wonders" still standing. Students and participants will visit Memphis, Sakkara, Sphinx, and the National Egyptian Museum, which is a showcase for one of the world's most spectacular collections of antiquities including the treasures of King Tutankhamen. We will visit the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the Temples of Karnak, the Temple of Luxor, and enjoy the breathtaking Sound and Light Laser Shows. The program will also include a visit to Alexandria and Al-Alamein World War II Military Museum. For-credit students, a web-based course component will be available during the Fall of 2009, though this is officially a Winterim course. Students will keep a journal during the tour, and write a paper upon return.

Art, Architecture and the Cultures of India
3 Credits: ART 291 (FA, IS)
Experience the diversity of India’s culture as expressed through its art and architecture. This three-part interdisciplinary course explores the art, culture, and supporting mathematical principles of architecture in the North Indian Sub-continent. You will gain hands on experience with drawing, and photographing, where appropriate, during the travel portion the class. We will begin our “journey” through India first via an asynchronous, web-based course component starting in November 2009, take the study tour during Winterim, and create an artifact journal/portfolio, upon return.

Partial scholarships may be available for students who demonstrate financial need according to FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) guidelines. To be considered for a scholarship for the China and Mexico summer 2010 programs, you must submit your study abroad application along with a $500 deposit by January 1, 2010.
