UW Colleges 2009 Grants to Increase Student Engagement through Professional Development (GISE-PD)

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce the UW Colleges 2009 Grants to Increase Student Engagement through Professional Development (GISE-PD) program. The 2009 GISE program is intended to support professional development activities that advance the Engaging Students in the First Year (ESFY) initiative set forth in institutional priorities in the Foundations of Excellence Improvement Plan. To support this priority, the Office of Academic Affairs is excited about providing this competitive grant program to faculty and instructional and professional academic staff across the institution. Campuses, academic departments, and individuals are invited to submit proposals.

2009 Grants to Increase Student Engagement (GISE) Program Purposes and Description
The ultimate aims of these professional development funds are to:

  • Develop professional abilities of faculty and staff to implement successful ESFY programs on their campus or in their department and broaden ESFY campus-based or department-based curricular and/or co-curricular programming
  • Increase student engagement, success, and retention of first-year students on the campuses and/or in the academic disciplines.

2009 Grants to Increase Student Engagement (GISE) program will provide professional development support or summer research stipends to individuals or campus-based or department-based teams of individuals identified in the grant proposals. Successful applications will specify the type of professional development the individual or team will achieve from the proposed program or activity and will address 2009 ESFY priorities (e.g., at-risk student engagement and advising; building out-of-class learning opportunities, service learning, engaged citizenship or serving the public good; student and faculty engagement activities such as research projects into class expectations; improving student advising, especially around core disciplines such as math). Examples of funding requests that would meet these guidelines could include financial support for a campus or department to hold a meeting to showcase successful ESFY program information to individuals from other campuses/departments; conference or short course attendance on successful ESFY programs; online short course tuition related to ESFY objectives; special department meetings to develop better advising skills or how to implement service learning or student-faculty research programs.

    Requirements
  • Successful grant projects will be funded based on a budget not to exceed $2,000. Campuses and academic departments may submit multiple proposals none of which should exceed $2,000.
  • Professional development activities should be planned in the summer of 2009 for implementation in the fall of 2009 or spring of 20010.
  • Campus-oriented grant proposals should be approved by the appropriate campus committee(s) and the dean.
  • Department-oriented proposals should be approved by the appropriate department committee(s) and the chair.

Coordination
Should a campus or department proposal relate directly to the curriculum, individuals developing the proposals will be expected to coordinate their efforts with the campus and department curriculum committees as they develop future curriculum and staffing plans. Contingency plans should cover what will occur if the grant is or is not awarded. In addition, campus deans and department chairs should be consulted and kept informed of the proposal, especially as it relates to departmental on-campus offerings.
