According to a March 2006, UW Colleges survey, 31% of students reported consuming NO alcohol in the past 30 days. 64% of students reported that they consumed on average 0-3 drinks per week. Even though the majority of UWC students drink responsibly or not at all, there are still some students (approximately 1/3) who engage in high-risk drinking. High-risk drinkers are significantly more likely to experience negative consequences as a result of their choice to drink excessively.
If you drink, and you want to reduce your risk of negative consequences from drinking, follow these simple guidelines:
- Don't drink if you are sick, tired, or stressed out. Alcohol will effect you more, putting you more at risk.
- Drink NO more than 1 drink per hour. A drink is equal to 12 ounces of beer, 4-5 ounces of wine, or 1 ounce of hard liquor.
- Drink NO more than twice per week.
- Drink NO more than 3 drinks per day or drinking occasion.
e-Chug is an online alcohol assessment for students that is completely free and confidential. The e-Chug survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and feedback is immediately given. You can see how your drinking compares to that of other UW Colleges students and you can even find out how many extra calories you consume if you choose to drink! If you are concerned about your results or have questions, please contact your campus AODE prevention specialist.
