Dependency Status

Fall 2011 - Spring 2012

Dependency is determined by the student's answers to the following questions:

  • Were you born before?
    • January 1, 1988
  • Are you enrolled as a graduate or professional student (master's or doctorate program)?
  • As of today, are you married?
  • Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you?
    • between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012
  • Do you have dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you?
    • now through June 30, 2012
  • At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent/ward of the court?
  • Are you a veteran of the U.S. armed forces?
  • Are you currently serving on active duty in the US Armed Forces for purposes other than training?
  • Are you or were you an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?
  • Are you or were you in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2010, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2010, did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2010, did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or was self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?

If the student is able to answer "Yes" to any of these questions, then he or she is Independent and the parent is not eligible to apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan. If the student answers "No" to all of the questions, he or she is Dependent and the parent is eligible to apply for the Direct Parent PLUS Loan.

If you are unable to answer yes to any of these questions but do not have parental information to include on the FAFSA, you may have a special circumstance. Please see your Student Services Office on campus for assistance.

 

Fall 2012 - Spring 2013
