Configuring Outlook Express to Access

Configuring Outlook Express for UW-Colleges Email.

Before you get started (assumptions):

  • Outlook Express is installed.
  • Internet access is available.
  • You have a general familiarity with basic email operations.
  • You are using Windows XP

 


Setting up an email account.
Note: this section gives instructions for the preliminary setup required to use Outlook Express with your UWC email account.
1) Launch Outlook Express from the Start menu by following Start -> All Programs -> Outlook Express.

 

2) If you receive a message similar to the following, select "Yes." If not, skip to step 3.

 

3) If this is the first time you have run Outlook Express, a window like the one below will open. If not, you will need to follow Tools -> Accounts -> Add -> Mail. Enter your name in the box and click the "Next" button.

 

4) Enter your UWC email address in the box, and click the "Next" button. If you are a student and do not know your email address, visit https://www.uwc.edu/account.

 

5) Set the incoming mail server type by clicking on the down arrow and selecting "IMAP." Next enter "mail.uwc.edu" as the Incoming mail server, and "mail.uwc.edu" as the Outgoing mail server. When you are finished, click "Next" to continue.

 

6) The Account name field should already be filled in with your user name. Enter your network/email password. Make sure the "Remember password" checkbox is checked, and click the "Next" button.

 

7) Click the "Finish" button to end the account setup.

 

8) If you have other email accounts setup, you will see a window similar to the one below. Click the "Close" button. If not, skip to step 9.

 

9) You will now be prompted to download your email folders.  Select the "Yes" button.  Outlook Express will begin downloading your folders.  You should see a screen similar to the one below.  Please note that this may take several minutes to complete. When it is finished, click the "OK" button to continue.

 


Configuring your account to send email.
Note: this section give instructions on how to configure the newly created email account to send mail through the UW-Colleges email servers.
1) Within Outlook Express, follow Tools -> Accounts.... Click once on "imap.uwc.edu" to highlight it and then click on the "Properties" button.

 

2) In the resulting window, choose the "Servers" tab. Make sure the checkbox next to "My server requires authentication" is checked, and click on the "Settings" button.

 

3) Click on the Advanced tab and change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 25. You'll also want to check both checkboxes next to "This server requires a secure connection"  When you are finished your properties window should look just like the one below, with 25 as the SMTP port and 993 for the IMAP port. NOTE: IF your ISP blocks port 25 you will need to use another e-mail client to access your e-mail. 4) Make sure that "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected and click the "OK" button.  Finish by clicking "OK" in the "imap.uwc.edu Properties" window.

 

5) If you do not already have the "Internet Accounts" window open, go to Tools and click on Accounts.  Within the "Internet Accounts" window, click on "Add" and then "Directory Service..."

 

6) Enter "ldap.uwc.edu" in the text box, and click the "Next" button.

 

7) Make sure "Yes" is selected, and click the "Next" button.  Select the "Finish" button on the next window.  Lastly, close the "Internet Accounts" window to complete the Directory Services setup.
