Position Introduction
The University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc, one of 13 liberal arts, freshman-sophomore, transfer campuses of the UW Colleges, invites applications for Director of Library Services. The campus is in a beautiful setting overlooking Lake Michigan, about 30 minutes south of Green Bay. It serves 650 students.
This position is ideal for the generalist who desires to combine direct service to students, faculty, and staff with administrative responsibilities. Apply leadership skills in a small academic library with access to the full range of shared electronic and print resources of the entire University of Wisconsin Library System. Cataloging services, acquisitions support, and databases and automation support are provided by a joint UW Colleges Library Support Services unit located in Fond du Lac. The Director of Library Services is responsible for the Management of the Campus Library and reports directly to the Campus Executive Officer/Dean. The position is an academic staff, twelve-month appointment. The Director develops, promotes, maintains and evaluates library services to faculty, staff, a varied student population, and the community. The Director trains and supervises one support staff member and student employees, supports the curriculum through active collaboration with faculty and staff, works actively with the Instructional Technology (IT) staff to enrich the library's operations, and is proficient in library computer technology.
Qualifications
An ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science and a minimum of two years professional experience are required. Experience in an academic library is preferred.
Administration of the Library
- Within the framework of the campus mission and governance bodies, and in consultation with the Campus Dean, set library policies, goals, and objectives. `
- Administer all aspects of library services for the campus.
- Maintain the library as a user-friendly, multi-media learning center. Actively consult with faculty, students, and staff in utilizing library resources and developing programs to serve their educational needs.
- Maintain professional knowledge of library and information science. Communicate new developments and potential opportunities to the Campus Dean and campus community. Also be aware of developments in information technology and instructional media and their relationship to the library as a teaching and learning resource.
- Participate in a variety of campus, UW Colleges, regional and statewide Committees and represent campus issues, ideas, and concerns as appropriate. Serve on UW Colleges Library Council. Actively participate in campus and university-wide planning activities.
- Oversee library lending, collection maintenance, service agreements, and all other services.
- In consultation with the Office of Student Services, Administrative Services Office, and appropriate governance committees, periodically review policies regarding lending, overdue charges, fees, etc.
- Work closely with the Campus Information and Instructional Technology Committee and, the Colleges Information and Instructional Technology Committee, Library Support services, and appropriate bodies and individuals to coordinate library operations and plans.
- Work with the campus IT Staff to update and expand library services.
- Actively participate in Engaging Students in the First Year (ESFY) activities.
Collection Management
- With the advice and active, regular input of faculty and staff, select books, periodicals, audiovisual materials and other information resources to support the campus mission and curriculum.
- Maintain up-to-date holdings, records, and files necessary for access and inventory of library holdings. Collect, evaluate and report data, regarding the library's collections, in a timely and accurate manner.
Public Service
- Maintain a strong customer service image for the library. Develop the library as a "one stop resource" for information services, which may be delivered on site or electronically.
- Provide reference and information services, including interlibrary loan, to meet the needs of campus clients and the public.
- Provide instruction and assistance to students, faculty, staff and the public in the use of various information resources. Prepare and disseminate library-related aids for users; make classroom presentations as requested by instructors; stay current with curricular and pedagogical trends/developments, and keep campus informed of new information resources and services.
- Continuously collect, evaluate, and report data regarding public services, and adapt services to serve changing needs.
Supervision
- Supervise all library staff, including support staff and student employees. Provide training for library staff, including support staff.
- Maintain all required personnel records and manage all personnel matters related to the library.
Budget
- Plan the library budget in consultation with the Campus Dean, appropriate campus committees, and the UW Colleges Library Council.
- Order materials, equipment, and supplies following UW-System, campus, and Library Council procedures and within budgetary allocations.
- In consultation with the Dean, seek funding and alternative resources to enhance the Library's ability to provide adequate collections, access to information resources, and service to its clients.
- Administer budgets within state and campus guidelines and allocated amounts. Maintain all library account balances, including personnel, supplies and equipment, and capital.
Professional/Community Activities
- Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations and activities, as appropriate.
- Establish goodwill and working relationships with a variety of external groups and organizations for the benefit of the campus.
Salary
