The Colleges and the Campus
The UW Colleges is the freshman-sophomore transfer institution within the UW System. The UW Colleges functions as a unit that comprises thirteen two-year campuses, each of which offers an excellent liberal arts and pre-professional education for students beginning work toward a bachelor's degree. Most UW-Barron County students transfer to a baccalaureate degree-granting UW institution, with UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls the most common choices. UW-Barron County is located in Rice Lake, a city of 8,500 located in Northwest Wisconsin one hour north of Eau Claire and two hours from Minneapolis-St. Paul. Currently, the campus serves approximately 500 students in a college environment that provides for small classes and individualized student attention. It also serves approximately 100 students in regional, rural high schools by providing college-level courses through interactive distance education technology. The region has the advantage of a high quality natural environment with a multitude of parks and outdoor opportunities. Eagles have flown over the Red Cedar River behind the campus daily throughout its existence.
