Lampe Named UW Colleges Provost and Vice Chancellor

David Wilson, chancellor of UW Colleges and UW-Extension, has named Gregory P. Lampe, Ph.D., provost and vice chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges. Lampe has served as interim provost and vice chancellor since 2007. The position is the chief operating and academic officer of the UW Colleges.
In announcing the appointment, Chancellor Wilson noted that Lampe, ''understands the important role the UW Colleges plays in advancing the Wisconsin Idea.'' UW Colleges extends the resources of the university to the boundaries of the state through the high-quality, liberal arts undergraduate general education program of the UW Colleges delivered through the UW Colleges Online and 13 campuses in communities throughout the state.
''Lampe walked the talk of the Wisconsin Idea most recently by leading a concerted effort by the UW Colleges to serve more adult students with baccalaureate degree preparation,'' Chancellor Wilson added.
''I look forward to working with the chancellor in leading the institution's future as a national model for equitable, accessible, academic excellence for liberal arts general education,'' Lampe said. ''Leaders do not march alone - we envision the way ahead by listening closely to the words and ideas of those living the institution and its values every day. I look forward to working with many of my colleagues as we work to serve our students and our state.''
Lampe has more than 30 years of experience in higher education, including teaching, research and administration. He has won several teaching excellence awards and has served as a department chair and interim campus dean.
Lampe has his bachelor's degree in secondary education, communication studies from Slippery Rock University (Pennsylvania) and his master's in communication studies, rhetorical studies from Northern Illinois University. He earned his doctorate in communication arts, rhetoric and public address from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
In his work as the interim provost for the UW Colleges, he has provided leadership for the proposed baccalaureate of applied arts and sciences degree, the strategic planning process, the Diversity Climate Study and the Equity Scorecard Project, and co - led the Integrated Enrollment Management Pilot Project and the Adult Student Initiative.
The appointment followed a national search chaired by Andy Keogh, CEO/dean of UW-Marshfield/Wood County. The appointment will be effective May 1, 2009. Lampe has held the interim position since the retirement of former provost Margaret Cleek in 2007.
