UW Colleges Transfer
Choosing a University
How do I select a transfer institution?
First of all, you must assess your needs and limitations. Do you have the freedom, grades, test scores, money and motivation to go anywhere in the world?
Some of these and other factors may help you decide on a transfer institution. First you must consider your major and your financial situation to narrow the choices down.
If you can afford to go out of state, you need to consider an institution that is strong in your major area. Your advisor or academic instructors will be able to help you with selections.
If you are going to stay in the state of Wisconsin, again you need to look at your major area of study to make sure the four-year institution grants a degree in that program. Once you have narrowed to two or three institutions, your advisor can help you obtain materials from those institutions to assess the institution's strengths and weaknesses.
Your advisor can also arrange for "phone meetings" with admissions officers from these schools where they phone the school during one of the advising appointments, and put them on speaker phone.

Does knowing where I'm going make a difference in the courses I take?
Yes. Each institution has different requirements. You can meet these requirements at the UW Colleges, but it helps to know where you're going when you select your classes.
Your advisor will help you select courses that meet the needs of a specific transfer institution.

How do I know what the other institutions' admissions requirements are?
Your advisor will be able to help you understand the admissions requirements from other institutions. They can connect you will an advisor on the campus you will be entering to facilitate a smooth transfer.
