 Dr. Michael Jurmu, was the 2012-13 UW Colleges Service-Learning Coordinator along with being a member of the UW-Fond du Lac Tenure, Retention and Promotion (TRP) Committee. He also serves on the Executive Committee in the Department of Geography & Geology

Dr. Jurmu has published numerous articles such as "Implementing Musical Lyrics to Teach Geography; a Simple Model," “A Morphological Comparison of narrow, Low-Gradient Streams Traversing Wetland Environments to Alluvial Streams,” and “Applications of GIS for Public Surface Water Supply Systems.” He recently published an article in the Journal of Geography describing his Introductory Service-Learning project.

His many presentations include, “Teaching Skills and Content: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Freshmen Seminar,” “Training Teachers to Use Geographical Information Systems,” and Training Teachers to Utilize GIS Technology for Physical Geography Instruction: Procedures and Successes.”

Dr. Jurmu is involved with the campus initiative of service-learning for his students. He not only has incorporated a service-learning component in his Weather & Climate course in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac, he presented his design at a service-learning conference at Marquette University. He also has community connection with the Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac having developed an open-lab, hands-on experience for kids to promote the Wisconsin Science Festival program.

Because of his commitment to teaching that creates a successful environment for learning, Dr. Jurmu was one of four recipients of the 2012 Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Awards and was the 2013 UW-Fond du Lac Teaching Excellence award winner.

Dr. Jurmu advises numerous students and has been a member of the campus “Sunshine Club” for several years. He was also actively involved in the development and implementation of the UW-Fond du Lac Strategic Plan and Action Plan.
